Nester allowed just two runs in 15 innings versus Middle Tennessee
IRVING, Texas – Marshall softball redshirt junior Sydney Nester was honored as the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this season, the league office announced Monday.
Â
Nester has been previously selected on Feb. 14, Feb. 28, and March 14.
Â
The right-hander dominated in the circle against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders. Nester threw 15 total innings, allowed just two runs, and recorded a 0.93 ERA. She helped lead Marshall to the series sweep with wins in her two starts as well as pitching the last two innings of relief in game two.
Â
Nester had the start in game one on Friday and allowed just one run late in the sixth inning as the Herd won 4-1. She allowed just three hits and struck out eight through the complete-game victory. Nester picked up her 500th career strikeout, 156th at Marshall, in the second inning.
Â
The Hillsville, Virginia, native came on in relief to start the fifth inning in game two on Saturday on a cold and blustery day. The Herd led 8-1 when she entered the circle and Nester proceeded to continue to shut down the Blue Raiders, retiring all six batters she faced through the fifth and sixth innings as Marshall ended the game early, 9-1, in the bottom of the sixth. Nester struck out one more batter and received great defensive play behind her.
Â
On another cold day on Sunday for the series finale, Nester had the start again and pitched her 15th complete game of the season in 17 starts. She struck out nine more batters bringing her season total to 172. Nester allowed just three hits and one early run to Middle Tennessee as Marshall again finished the game in the sixth with another 9-1 win. The Blue Raiders bat .118 against her for the series.
Â
Nester improved her record to 12-5 and lowered her ERA to 1.52. Opponents are hitting just .171 against her.
Â
Nester is the first Herd pitcher to be honored as a conference pitcher of the week four times in a single season. Randi Nielson (2002-05) was selected as the Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week three times in 2005. Marshall Athletics Hall of Famer Sara Gulla (1998-2001) also earned the weekly award three times in 2001. Gulla was a 7-time selection in the MAC through her career and Nielson earned six in her playing days. Jordan Dixon (2014-17) has picked up the most for Marshall in Conference USA with five total. Dixon was named once in 2015, and two times each in 2016 and 2017.
