Vanderheyden wins twice
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University tennis team (7-8) dropped a dual, 5-2, to James Madison Friday evening at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center.
"We did a good job on the doubles point," said Marshall head coach John Mercer. "Sophia [Hurrion] stepped in for Liz [Stefancic] and she came up big to help us win the doubles point. In the singles, we have to get back to basics and fundamentals while we work harder to win."
The Thundering Herd started on the front foot with Madi Ballow and Jutte Van Hansewyck defeating Kylie Moulin and Daria Afanasyeva on Court 2 (6-2). Minutes later, Emma Vanderheyden and Hurrion clinched the doubles point on Court 1, also winning 6-2.
James Madison wrested control back during the singles play with wins by Kylie Moulin, Daniela Voloh and Amanda Nord on Courts 2, 4 and 6. Vanderheyden looked to spark the Thundering Herd with a come-from-behind win in set one (6-4) and carried the momentum through set two (6-3) to cut the Dukes' advantage to 3-2. Van Hansewyck and Hurrion both battled, but ultimately fell.
