HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Marshall softball team split a doubleheader at Northern Kentucky on Tuesday. The Herd won game one, 3-2, and then dropped game two, 5-4. Fifth-year senior Aly Harrell hit her 47th career home run in the game two loss.

The Thundering Herd is now 25-11 overall. The Norse are 16-23.

Game One: Marshall 3, Northern Kentucky 2
The Herd scored three runs in the second inning and redshirt junior Sydney Nester went the distance for the 20th time to earn her 18th win of the season. She struck out five more batters bringing her season total to 218.

NKU scored first with one run in the bottom of the first. Marshall responded with its big inning in the second to take the lead. Fifth-year senior Katie Adams hit a one-out double to left-center and then advanced to third on a single to left from fellow fifth-year senior Madison Whitaker. Freshman Lauren Love drove home Adams to tie the game with a sacrifice fly to right-center. Fifth-year senior Armani Brown kept the inning going with a single up the middle and then Harrell was hit by a pitch, the 48th of her career, to load the bases. Senior Grace Chelemen drove home Whitaker and Brown with a double to center. Marshall led 3-1.

The Norse scored one more run in the second and had a chance to try and tie the game until sophomore Autumn Owen started a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Love made another great catch in left field foul territory. The freshman tracked down the fly ball and made the grab just before slamming into the fence for the second out. Owen had the assist at third on the next batter to finish the inning.

Nester ended the fifth inning with her third strikeout and Owen made another great play at third to cap off the sixth and strand two Norse runners on base. Nester ended the game with her fifth strikeout to hang on to the victory.

Marshall tallied eight hits with five going for doubles. Adams and Chelemen had the first doubles of the game in the second inning, leading to all three runs. Owen had a double in the third, Stevenson hit her 11th of the season in the fifth and Whitaker tallied the last double in the sixth.

Harrell reached base 3-of-4 times at the plate. She was walked twice and hit by a pitch once. Harrell has now increased her Marshall all-time career walks record to 158. She is second all-time in hit-by-pitches needing five more to tie Marcena Bertoldo (2007-10) for first all-time.

Whitaker and Brown both had two hits each in the win.

Game Two: Northern Kentucky 5, Marshall 4
The Herd trailed throughout most of the contest until fighting back in the sixth, but just could not hang on as the Norse took the win.

Northern Kentucky scored one run in the first, one in the second and two more in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Freshman Bub Feringa got the start in the circle, her second of the season. Feringa pitched the first two innings allowing four hits, two runs, one earned and struck out one. She also had two assists. Redshirt junior Cailey Joyce entered the game in the third and then sophomore Brianna McCown came in to finish the inning and pitched the rest of the way. McCown allowed four hits, one unearned run and had a season-high five strikeouts.

Marshall had base runners in the first, second and fourth innings but could not take advantage.

Finally, in the sixth, down 4-0, the Herd bats came to life scoring four runs to tie the game. Aly Harrell led off the inning with a solo home run to left-center. It was her seventh of the season and pulls her to within three career home runs of joining Rachel Folden (2005-08) and teammate Mya Stevenson in the 50 Home Runs Club. Grace Chelemen followed with a single to right-center and then stole second. Three batters later, with two outs, Autumn Owen drew a four pitch walk which led to a pitching change for Northern Kentucky. Lauryn Hicks, who had started the game, was pulled for Madisyn Eads who pitched the complete first game.

The first batter Eads faced was Katie Adams who hit a double to center that scored both Chelemen and Owen. Marshall now trailed by one. Next, Madison Whitaker ripped a double into the right-center gap that sent redshirt freshman Amaya Lee home, who was in to run at second for Adams. The Herd tied the game at 4-4.

Unfortunately, the defense for Marshall could not hang on allowing one run on an error in the bottom of the sixth. Hicks re-entered the circle for the seventh and retired Marshall in order to finish the game.

Harrell and Adams had two hits each. Chelemen and Whitaker had one apiece.

Marshall returns to action Thursday through Saturday, April 14-16, as the FIU Panthers come to Dot Hicks Field for a three game series. First pitch for Thursday and Friday is 1 p.m., with the finale on Saturday scheduled for 12 p.m. The Saturday contest is also Emileigh Cooper Day, as the Herd will honor the memory of former All-Conference USA performer Emileigh Cooper and give out the 2022 Warrior Award.
