TEXARKANA, Ark. – Marshall men's golf junior Tyler Jones was named to the Conference USA All-Tournament Team on Wednesday and the end of the C-USA Championships. He finished tied for fifth after the final round at the Texarkana Country Club.
The Thundering Herd finished 13th. As a team, Marshall improved its score by nine strokes in the final round.
"Tyler played incredibly well this week and just came up a little short," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "He finished in a tie for fifth which put him on the Conference USA All-Tournament Team. He is the first to win that award since Nathan Kerns in 2013. It was a little sad to see Brad (Plaziak) and Noah (Mullens) play their final rounds for the Herd. They both have had great careers and were wonderful leaders this year and will be missed.
"I was really excited about our freshmen this week. We brought three first-year players down here and I think they learned a lot. Our future looks really bright with these young guys and Tyler leading the way."
Jones is the first Marshall men's golfer to finish in the top five and make the All-Tournament Team since Nathan Kerns (2009-13) finished third in 2013. Along with Kerns, Jones joins two other Herd golfers to place in the top five in the C-USA Championships and be named to the All-Tournament Team. Bosten Miller (2008-12) tied for fifth in 2012, and Shawn Warren (2003-07) came in fifth place in 2007.
Jones had a great bounce back early in the round. The Westerville, Ohio, native scored a double-bogey on his second hole of the day (No. 11) and then quickly responded with an eagle on No. 12 to pull back to even. He finished the tournament scoring par or better on 44-of-54 holes.
Fifth-year senior Noah Mullens had a great final round for the Green and White. Mullens improved his score by nine strokes to finish with a 2-under 70 on Wednesday. The Milton, West Virginia, native recorded four birdies in the third round and moved up 14 places on the leaderboard. Mullens was one of just 11 golfers on Wednesday to shoot under par as he tied for the second-best individual score of the round. Mullens transferred to Marshall during the 2019-20 season and was unable to compete before the pandemic hit. He competed in all 11 events this season for the Herd, 15 in all for his Marshall career, and was the top finisher for the Herd three times. His best finish was third place at the River Run Collegiate (Sept. 20-21).
Fifth-year senior Brad Plaziak also saw an improvement in his last round with the Herd. Plaziak lowered his score by three shots on Wednesday. The Atlanta, Georgia, native had a very solid back-nine to start the day scoring par on eight of the holes and sinking a birdie on No. 16. Plaziak competed in five events this season and 22 total in his Marshall career which began in 2017-18. He was honored as the C-USA Men's Golfer of the Week on Feb. 9 after a great showing at the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate.
Freshman Ryan Bilby dropped his score by four strokes on Wednesday. He recorded two birdies.
Florida Atlantic maintained its lead through the three rounds by one stroke over Southern Miss. The Owls and the Golden Eagles advance to Match Play on Thursday along with UTSA and No. 28 Charlotte as the top four teams.
Michael Barnard of Middle Tennessee jumped into the top spot after his third-straight 2-under par round to win the individual medal. He finished one stroke ahead of Max Sturdza of Florida Atlantic.
