Second career weekly honor for Jones
IRVING, Texas – Marshall men's golf junior Tyler Jones was named Conference USA Co-Men's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. It is the first weekly honor of the season and the second of Jones' career.
Jones had a career performance at the Golfweek Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate, March 28-30, setting a program record with a 10-under 62 in the final round.
"I am so happy for Tyler," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "This was well deserved. He works so hard and is a great leader for this team. That round of 62 was the best round I have ever seen."
The Westerville, Ohio, native began the tournament with a 1-under 71 in the first round and then scored a 1-over 73 in the second round to sit at an even par 144 going into the final day. Jones was tied for sixth overall and was six shots back of the leader Zack Byers of Gardner-Webb. Despite windy conditions on Wednesday, Jones had an incredible round.
Jones began his record-breaking round with a birdie on his first hole of the day, No. 15, and kept right on rolling. He sank three birdies in-a-row with No. 18 and then Nos. 1 and 2. Jones sank two more birdies on the fourth and fifth holes and was now 6-under for the round, and the tournament. As Jones returned to the back-nine to finish his final five holes, he was five strokes behind Byers for the lead.
The junior golfer birdied four of the last five holes closing the gap. Byers ended up with his only bogey of the day on his final hole. Jones completed the comeback and tied Byers for the lead and a share of the win. Jones improved his score by 11 strokes from the second to the third round. He had his first career bogey-free round on the way to his first collegiate victory. Jones led the field with 18 total birdies, and he shot par or better on 46-of-54 holes.
Jones broke the long-standing single-round record of 63 that was set by Marshall Athletics Hall of Famer Linden Meade all the way back on May 23, 1958, in the Mid-American Conference Championship. Meade went on to win the MAC Title and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991.
The closest a Marshall player had come to Meade's 63, which was also 10-under par, was Alex Weiss scoring a 6-under 65 on Sept. 12, 2017, in the second round of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.
Jones continued his great play at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate, April 2-3. The tournament began just two days after Marshall finished the Golfweek AGT. Playing two rounds on Saturday, Jones shot a 3-over 74 in the first round and rebounded to shoot a 1-under 70 in the second round. In the third round, Jones scored a 3-under 68 and moved up the leaderboard once again.
Next up for Marshall is the Conference USA Championships, April 25-28, at the Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Arkansas.
