Herd to host eight home matches
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team released its 2022 fall schedule on Friday for its first season in the Sun Belt Conference. The Herd will host eight regular season matches at Hoops Family Field.
The Thundering Herd is coming off its third-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2021. Marshall's schedule features six opponents with double-digit victories last season and four programs that played in the NCAA Tournament. The Herd's opponents collectively won 127 matches in 2021.
Season tickets go on sale July 1. Single match tickets, if available, will be released Aug. 1. Season ticket purchases will include one ticket for each men's and women's match. More information can be found by clicking here on the Marshall men's soccer ticket page.
"Scheduling for the last few years has been absolutely crazy with the pandemic and then conference realignment," said Herd head coach Chris Grassie who enters his sixth season at the helm. "But, we're happy to announce our 2022 schedule, and we think it has some great matches for our fans.
"We have eight home matches, not including pre-season, and we have some premier match-ups our fans can enjoy. Our goal as always is to win the National Championship, and we feel our 2022 schedule puts us in the perfect position to do that as long as we perform. We can't wait to see you at Hoops Family Field in '22. Go Herd!"
Marshall begins the year with three exhibition matches, one at home and two on the road. The first is a road contest at Rio Grande (Aug. 12). The Red Storm won its conference championship and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in 2021. The Herd will then take on Radford at home (Aug. 14) with the final exhibition match on the road against Maryland (Aug. 19). The Terrapins advanced to the NCAA Tournament as well in 2021.
The regular season officially gets started at Hoops Family Field on Aug. 25 against VCU at 7:15 p.m. Marshall's other home non-conference matches are versus Pittsburgh (Sept. 2), Pacific (Sept. 11) and Robert Morris (Oct. 4). Pitt won 13 matches last season and saw its season come to a close in the NCAA quarterfinals to Notre Dame falling 4-2 on penalty kicks.
The Herd's non-conference road matches are at Butler (Aug. 29), Cleveland State (Sept. 7) and Wright State (Oct. 26). Cleveland State won 10 contests and lost to Oakland in the Horizon League Championship in 2021.
Marshall's first season in the Sun Belt Conference will have some familiar teams that the Herd has matched up with many times in the past. Kentucky, South Carolina and Old Dominion all left Conference USA to join the Sun Belt this season. Coastal Carolina and West Virginia are both in the Sun Belt as well after joining C-USA last season as a men's soccer member. The Chanticleers were already in the Sun Belt but now return with its men's soccer program as the league brought the sport back this season with plenty of members. Georgia State and Georgia Southern return to the Sun Belt after playing in the Mid-American Conference and James Madison makes the move from the Colonial Athletic Association.
The Herd opens the 2022 Sun Belt action on the road at Kentucky on Sept. 16. The other road conference matches are at Coastal Carolina (Sept. 30), South Carolina (Oct. 8), and Georgia State (Oct. 19). Kentucky won the 2021 Conference USA Championship and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 8 seed Clemson. Georgia State won 13 matches a year ago and defeated Charlotte in the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 3 seed Georgetown.
Marshall's first home conference contest will be against WVU on Sept. 24 at Hoops Family Field. The two in-state rivals met last season in Huntington with a record crowd of 3,033. The fans were treated to a great match as the teams played to an exciting 2-2 draw. Both teams were ranked in the top 25 throughout the season. The Mountaineers lost to No. 3 seed Georgetown, 4-1 on PKs, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament this past season.
The Herd's other home conference matches are versus Old Dominion (Oct. 15), Georgia Southern (Oct. 23) and James Madison (Nov. 1) to close out the regular season. JMU won 11 matches in 2021.
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament is set for Nov. 14-20 with the location to be determined.
Marshall will feature some new faces this fall, but still looks to have a strong squad. The Herd won the College Spring League Championship back in April with a 2-1 win over Bowling Green. Vinicius Fernandes was named the MVP and Oliver Semmle earned the Gold Glove award. Other key returners for the Herd this season are Milo Yosef, Collin Mocyunas, Ibrahima Diop, Gabriel Alves, Joao Souza, Alex Adjetey and Mohammed Seidu.
