Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team (1-0) took down the Evansville Purple Aces (0-2) in five sets (25-22, 19-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-9) for a win in the team's 2022 season opener at the Marshall Invitational on Saturday at the Cam Henderson Center.

"What a great way to start our season," Herd volleyball head coach Ari Aganus said after the victory. "We were able to rely on our depth we have this season to pull out a win over a veteran strong Evansville team. We have a lot to clean up for tomorrow, but I am so proud of the effort and continual fight we showed tonight."

Sophomore setter Brynn Brown recorded a triple-double with a team-high 33 assists and 16 digs to go with 10 kills. The 33 assists and 10 kills are career-highs for the Toledo, Ohio, native while the 16 digs tied her career-high.

Graduate student middle blocker Macy McElhaney had a team-best 17 kills as junior outside hitter Regan Tinkle converted on 12 of her 19 total attacks for a .421 hitting percentage.

Senior middle blocker Lydia Montague led the way as she was in on seven blocks for the Herd in the victory.

Marshall took the first two points of the opening set. However, the two sides then traded rallies until the score was tied 9-9. The visitors took five of the next six points as Marshall trailed 14-10. The home side chipped away at the Evansville advantage until a service ace by Montague evened the set, 17-17. The Herd were trailing 21-18 late in the set, but took seven of the final eight points to take the opening frame 25-22.

In the second set, Marshall held the lead twice before UE tied the set 10-10. The Purple Aces took the next point and held off the Herd the rest of the way as it took the frame 25-19.

MU was dominant in a third set that saw it never trail and only featured two ties. The Herd led by as many as 11 points in the stanza, 18-7. Evansville rallied off five-straight points late in the set, but Marshall hung on, 25-19. Tinkle recorded five kills on eight attempts while redshirt junior outside hitter Olivia Fogo finished three of her four attacks in the middle frame.

The Herd took an early 2-0 advantage to begin the fourth set, but the Purple Aces quickly battled to have the Herd trailing 6-5 and not allow Marshall to get back in front as the home team fell 25-20 to force a fifth set.

The Green and White did not mess around at the start of the fifth set. It took the first four points of the final frame on blocks and forced an Evansville timeout. Marshall continued its dominance in the last set as it finished with a .625 hitting percentage (7-of-9 on attacks), including a kill by Macy McElhaney to seal the set, 15-9, and the match.
