Box Score vs. Evansville
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team (1-2) dropped its final two contests of the Marshall Invitational on Saturday to Wright State (2-0) (25-16, 25-15, 25-27, 25-23) and to Evansville (1-2) (25-16, 25-19, 25-20) at the Cam Henderson Center.
"Today was a big learning lesson for us as a team," Herd volleyball head coach Ari Aganus said after the two matches. "There were some really bright moments that we will build on, but we didn't execute or take care of first ball contact well enough. We have to get more disciplined on defense and manage to adjustments teams are making on us faster and with more intent. With all that there is to work on, I am excited for what Brynn Brown was able to accomplish in all areas of the game, as well as Macy (McElhaney) stepping into a new role. As an entire team and staff we're not happy or satisfied with the results or performance of today, but we're excited to get to work Monday."
Match One: Wright State 3, Marshall 1
Brown recorded her second consecutive triple-double to start the season with 29 assists, 13 kills and 10 digs. The sophomore setter had a .600 hitting percentage as she finished 13 of her 20 attacks.
Fifth-year senior Kaitlyn Gehler had a team-high 17 digs and senior Lydia Montague tied Brown with 10 kills.
In the first set, the Herd took the opening point, but the Raiders captured eight of the next 10 to take an 8-3 advantage. However, Marshall answered with a 6-1 rally to tie the match, 9-9, after a Wright State attacking error. The two sides traded the next six points with the score settling at 12-12. The Raiders held the Herd to four points down the stretch as the home side fell 25-16 in the opening set.
After trailing 5-3 to begin the second frame, Marshall went on a 5-0 rally to grab an 8-5 advantage. The Raiders came back to tie the set 9-9 and took a 10-9 lead on its next serve. Marshall was unable to get back on top as it fell 25-16 in the set.
The third set was a see-saw battle between the two squads. The stanza saw five lead changes, the score tied 12 times and neither team led by more than two points. With the score tied 25-25, Marshall used kills by Brown and redshirt junior Olivia Fogo to take the set 27-25 and force a fourth set. The Herd had a match best .286 hitting percentage in the set.
Wright State tallied the first four points of the fourth frame, but Marshall chipped away at the deficit and tied the match 6-6. The Raiders retook the lead and eventually led 17-15. However, after a kill by senior Essence Clerkley, a combined block by Brown and graduate student Kayla Malec and a kill by Macy McElhaney saw the Herd grab an 18-17 lead and forced a Wright State timeout. The two sides went on to trade points down the stretch, but the Raiders collected the final two of the match to take the set 25-23.
Match Two: Evansville 3, Marshall 0
In the first set, Marshall couldn't find an answer as the Purple Aces held the lead wire-to-wire in a 25-16 opening set.
The Herd led 2-0 to begin the second stanza after a Brown service ace and a Purple Aces error. After Evansville took a 4-3 lead, the visitors held the advantage the rest of the set (25-19).
MU jumped out to a 4-2 lead with a pair of kills by Macy McElhaney and kills by Brown and junior Regan Tinkle. The Purple Aces answered with a 5-2 run to take a 7-6 advantage.
