STATESBORO, Ga. – With a 3-1 win on Sunday in Statesboro, Georgia, over the Georgia Southern Eagles (1-4-5, 0-1-2 Sun Belt), the No. 1 Marshall University men's soccer team (10-0, 3-0 Sun Belt) made program history by extending its win streak to a program best 10 matches.
"It's nice to get in the record books for the guys," Herd men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie said about the historic streak. "They deserve it. They've worked incredibly hard. It's an honor to be in the record book at Marshall, but we're not going to be happy until we get a trophy."
The previous high nine-match win streak was set in 1997.
"I thought we were good in spells tonight," Grassie said. "I think we could have been a little more clinical. We created a lot of chances, but fair play to Georgia Southern. I thought they defended really well and kept repelling us from their box a little bit. We just stuck at it. It wasn't a pretty performance."
The Eagles dealt the first blow of the match at the 32:20 mark with Jack Ireland putting the home side up 1-0 with a goal. It was the first time Marshall trailed this season in over 842 minutes of play.
However, MU's deficit wouldn't last long. The Herd drew a penalty kick four minutes and 19 seconds later with Adam Aoumaich stepping up to the spot. The France/United States international put the attempt into the bottom left corner and tied the match 1-1 in the 37th minute with his fifth goal of the season.
Aoumaich's night wasn't over. Just two minutes and 50 seconds into the second half, the senior winger sent in a cross from the right flank, finding Pablo Simon who directed the pass into the back of the goal to make it 2-1 Marshall. The goal was Simon's third of the season with Aoumaich notching his third assist of the season.
Then in the 79th minute, Marshall drew a second penalty kick on a foul drawn by Aoumaich. Defender Morris Duggan stepped up to the spot and found the back of the net to ice off the match with his second career with the other coming last season on October 23 against Georgia Southern.
