HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 1 Marshall University men's soccer team (11-0, 4-0 Sun Belt) extended its winning streak to 11 with a 2-0 shutout of the Georgia State Panthers (4-4-4, 1-2-1 Sun Belt) Saturday night at Hoops Family Field. It was the team's seventh shutout of the season as it has allowed just four goals in the first 11 games.
"It's a lot to do with us defending with the ball where we move the ball and pick where we go," Herd men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie said about his team conceding just four goals so far this season. "It starts with Morris (Duggan) and Taka (Fujita), our center backs, and Taimu (Okiyoshi) screening in front of them. Then our two fullbacks. Theo (Godard) I thought was excellent tonight. (Alex) Bamford and Rai (Pinto) did a great job tracking."
The Panthers played tight defense the first 14 minutes of the game. However, at the 14:46 mark, Pablo Simon found Adam Aoumaich who dumped a pass to Matthew Bell just outside the six-yard box. Bell then directed the pass into the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season. Aoumaich and Simon each registered their fourth assist of the season on the opening goal.
Gabriel Perrotta made a save in the 35th minute followed by a crucial save with three seconds left in the half to keep MU up 1-0 at halftime.
Perrotta came up with his third save of the contest in the 62nd minute to keep GSU off the board.
Five minutes later, Alexander Stjernegaard played give-and-go with Aymane Sordo as Sordo found the back of the goal to double Marshall's lead on his second goal of the season off Stjernegaard's third assist.
"I wasn't expecting that pass," Sordo said on Stjernegaard's pass that led to his goal. "It was the same action I had against UCF that I missed. On this one, I didn't think about it and just shot it."
Perrotta now has 6.5 shutouts this season earning his 11th win of the year. The graduate student goalkeeper lowered his goals against average to 0.37 and raised his save percentage to .867.
