HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (11-12, 3-6 Sun Belt) took down the App State Mountaineers (12-8, 3-6 Sun Belt) with a sweep (25-17, 25-21, 25-16) Friday night at the Cam Henderson Center.
"We focused all this week on simple volleyball, and I think it showed," Herd Volleyball head coach Ari Aganus said. "We didn't pass the greatest. There are a lot of things we can always look at, but we just kept it simple. We wanted to feed the hot hand no matter who that was."
Brynn Brown finished the contest with 31 assists and 10 digs for a double-double while completing eight of her 12 attacks for a .667 hitting percentage. Kylee Stokes finished with a match-high 12 kills. Essence Clerkley finished with eight kills on 15 attacks for .533 hitting percentage to go with a match-high seven blocks.
The Herd trailed 6-2 early in the first set. Marshall battled back, but App State held off the home squad until the score was 15-14 Mountaineers. Then MU finished the set on an 11-2 run, including closing it out with a 5-0 rally finished off by a block by Stokes and Lydia Montague, to take the opening set 25-17.
Much like the first, Marshall saw itself down 9-2 in the second set. The Herd came back from the deficit to take a 19-18 advantage after a service ace by Clerkley. The home side finished off the set by taking six of the final nine points to finish it off 25-21.
While the third was a highly contested one through the first 24 points, it was all Herd. Marshall took the final set 25-16, taking 13 of the final 17 points, and finishing the final frame with a .438 hitting percentage to complete the sweep.
