NORFOLK, Va. – Second-half goals from Braian Amaro and Alexander Adjetey helped the No. 6 Marshall University Men's Soccer team (13-2, 6-2 Sun Belt) to a 2-0 shutout in Norfolk at Old Dominion (5-5-5, 2-5-1 Sun Belt) Friday night.
"First of all, I'd like to say congratulations to Alan Dawson on a fantastic career," Herd men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie about the ODU skipper retiring after 36 years as a head coach in collegiate soccer. "He's been a champion many times and his teams have always been really tough to play against. He's been a great servant to the game and to ODU. I wish him every happiness in his retirement."
With Marshall up 1-0, Matthew Bell sent a pass up to Adjetey. Adjetey cut in off the right wing and fired a shot past the Monarch goalkeeper off his left foot in the 79th minute. Adjetey's goal was his third of the season as Bell registered his 10th assist of the year to tie the program single-season record.
"I thought we fought really well tonight," Grassie commented. "The game was very stop-and-start due to all the fouls, but we kept our cool and played our football. Very proud of the lads tonight. We've had a few guys come into the lineup and they've performed admirably. We needed the win to get back on the horse, so to speak, but to play that way against the adversity was a bonus."
Amaro tallied his second goal of the year for the eventual game winner in the 54th minute off a corner kick sent in by Adam Aoumaich. The Amaro shot was the first one target of the game for MU.
With saves in the sixth and 87th minutes, goalkeeper Gabriel Perrotta recorded a clean sheet. The graduate student now has a conference best 7.5 shutouts this season.
