WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball (1-1) fell to the Radford Highlanders (1-1) at the Greenbrier Resort Friday night, 66-62.
"We weren't ready play," Herd men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "It's a new team. We're looking to get our leadership and how you come and prepare for every game (down). They (Radford) has a veteran squad, who came back and who's used to the big strong games and traveling. We have to be better. We were down by as many as 15. We did fight back. They were a lot more physical. We're going to have to be more physical."
Nate Martin, who recorded 16 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, tied the game, 62-62, on a layup from an assist by Kamdyn Curfman with just 24 ticks to go. The lay-in was part of a 10-1 run from 2:18 to the 0:24 mark with Curfman tallying eight of his team-high 18 points.
Radford's Bryan Antoine completed a four-point with 1.5 left in the ball game to end MU's comeback.
The Herd had to grind to get back in the game, trailing by as many as 16, including an 11-point deficit in the second half. A 15-2 run to begin the final 20 minutes of the ballgame, concluded by a Kevon Voyles layup at the 14:38 mark, gave MU its first lead since scoring the opening basket in the first seconds of play.
Marshall handled the ball well in the contest turning it over just six times while forcing 15 takeaways and converting those into 14 points with Voyles recording five steals, tying his career high.
In addition to his double-double, Martin rejected a career-high four shots in the contest against Radford.
