Slow start foils Herd in season opener
Box Score
FAIRFAX, Va. – The first game of the 2023-24 Marshall women's basketball season showed moments of great resiliency, but ultimately fell short at the hands of George Mason, 84-77.
Marshall trailed by as much as 23 early in the second half, but clawed its way to within four through energy and strong defense in the late third and fourth quarters.
Senior guard and Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference First Team member Roshala Scott led the way for MU with 28 points. Breanna Campbell scored 17 in her Marshall debut, Abby Beeman had 16 and led the team with seven rebounds.
"Had we played all four quarters like we did the second half, honestly had we played three quarters like we did the second half, we are coming away a lot happier right now," Marshall first-year Head Coach Kim Caldwell said. "Just putting four quarters together the way we want it to look, where we had 29 points in the third and 26 in the fourth is key. The second half [The team] was a whole heck of a lot of fun to watch, it's just too bad they weren't the first."
The Herd struggled to find a rhythm offensively in the first half, making 23 percent of shots in the opening two quarters. Marshall turned the ball over 18 times entering the halftime break.
Marshall's defense limited George Mason to just 31.3 percent in the first quarter, and created 24 turnovers in the game, but the Patriots found a groove in the second and third, scoring 51 points in the middle two quarters.
Ta'Viyanna Habib led the Patriots with 20 points. preseason All-A10 player Nalani Kaysia had 10 rebounds to lead both teams.
