ATLANTA – The Marshall University men's basketball team (21-6, 10-4 Sun Belt) closed out a four-game road swing 3-1 after an 88-77 win over the Georgia State Panthers (10-16, 3-11 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.
"I think today I let the game come to me. I didn't force anything," Taevion Kinsey said about his performance in the win. "They (Georgia State) played hard."
Kinsey scored a career-high 37 points as the Herd picked up its 21st win of the season, tying the most regular-season wins during the tenure of head coach Dan D'Antoni set in 2017-18.
"This is not an easy league. It's very similar to the one we came from," D'Antoni said after the road win. "Taevion was almost perfect and Andy was 'A+.' You don't get a sense of their determination and how it affects the team to propel us to win."
After a scrappy first half, an Andrew Taylor three pointer two minutes into the second half gave MU an 11-point lead, 50-39. The Panthers fought back to tie the contest 54-54 at the 13:19 mark.
However, the Herd and Taylor took over. The Corbin, Kentucky, native jumpstarted a 15-2 run with an and-one that saw Marshall take a 69-56 lead with nine minutes remaining in the contest. The redshirt senior accounted for 11 points during the run.
"I think it was us putting together a successful road trip," Taylor said of the team's performance. "I think the last couple weeks on Saturday, we weren't as prepared and the energy wasn't there. Today, I'm proud of our guys for sticking it out. Even if they were tired, they kept playing. We have to play for all 40 minutes."
After going 3-for-8 from the field in the first half, Taylor made seven of his 11 shots in the final 20 minutes for 17 of his 26 points in the contest to go with five assists and five rebounds. Taylor went 5-for-8 on three-point attempts.
Kinsey nailed 12 of his 19 attempts from the field and went 12-for-14 from the free-throw line for his career-high 37 points. It's the most scored by a student-athlete in a Sun Belt Conference game this season and the most by a SBC student-athlete against a Division I opponent this season.
Jacob Conner went a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc for nine points as Micah Handlogten grabbed nine boards, tied for the game-high.
Notes
Marshall is 8-4 on the road this season.
Kinsey notched the fifth game of 30 or more points during his career, second of the season. The fifth-year senior has scored double-figure points in 108 of his last 111 games.
With his 26 points, Taylor eclipsed the 20-point mark for the 11th time this season, including four of the last five games.
The Herd is 16-2 when it scores 80 or more points this season.
MU has made 50 percent or more of its shots in seven contests this season after making 31 of its 62 attempts in today's win. Marshall is perfect in those contests.
