Thundering Herd wins in final at-bat in opener

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Marshall softball team (5-2) split a pair of games in the sun on Saturday. The Herd defeated Indiana State by a one-run margin before falling to the hosts, UTC.

First Game: Marshall 3, Indiana State 2

Marshall rallied from behind in Saturday's opener as Savannah Rice finished on the winning end of a pitcher's duel.

Rice finished off the Sycamores (1-1) in the 7th with a pair of strikeouts. The junior transfer, who pitched with the lead for the first time in the final frame, ended with nine punchouts, allowing just three hits.

The win gave Marshall its second win in its final at-bat this year.

Clutch hitting put MU in front in the 6th. Camryn Michallas hit a looper into right field to score Bub Feringa. Feringa's one-out double followed by a pair of walks set up the game tying-hit. Rielly Lucas picked up her eighth RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly to give Marshall the lead.

Indiana State had previously retaken the lead in the top half of the inning after Coach Smith Lyon's team came back in the 5th.

A hit by pitch and error kickstarted the first Herd rally in the bottom of the 5th. Pinch hitter Abby Darnley singled to load the bases for Lauren Love. Love's productive out tied the game, earning her third RBI of the year..

Rice, the Marshall, N.C. native, earned her first win as a member of the Herd in her second start.

Second Game: Chattanooga 7, Marshall 4

The Herd battled back and forth with the Mocs (2-0), but a pair of home runs for the hosts pushed Chattanooga in front for good.

The Herd rallied with a four spot in the 3rd to take a one-run lead. Four singles in the inning capped by an Owen hit down the third base line put Marshall in front.

Feringa drove in two runs in the inning to total nine for the season.

From there, UTC's Taylor Long excelled in relief, keeping the Herd off the board over the final four frames.

Chattanooga's first long ball opened the 5th to promptly tie the game. A two-out knock put the Mocs in front, and they would add another home run in the 6th to provide insurance.
