Marshall Softball Picks Up 10th Win of Young Season Over Princeton

Sydney Nester strikes out season-high 10 Tigers.
LYNCHBURG, Va. — The first weather delay of the 2023 season did not dampen the Marshall softball team's performance Saturday.
The Herd (10-2) defeated Princeton, 10-2 in six innings after waiting nearly five hours to play from its originally scheduled start time. Autumn Owen, who hit three home runs across two games Friday, slugged another shot over the right field wall to end the game in the bottom of the 6th.
A pair of Sydney Bickel triples and Grace Chelemen's home run also highlighted an offensive explosion for the Herd.
After Alex Coleman's second bunt single of the game in the 2nd, Bickel originally reached on her own bunt single, but the play was later ruled a foul ball. On the next pitch, the Peoria, Ariz. native ripped the triple down the right field line to score the Herd's third of the game.
Owen's sacrifice fly brought in Bickel to give Coach Megan Smith Lyon's team the 4-1 lead.
After Princeton - who entered Saturday undefeated - scored its second unearned run off Sydney Nester in the top of the 3rd, Bickel brought in Coleman again with her second triple, this time in the right center gap.
Chelemen's fifth-career blast in the 4th scored Owen and Rielly Lucas to put the game out of reach for Nester and the Herd defense.
Nester's 10 strikeouts were a new season best. The redshirt-senior is now 7-1 with a 0.96 ERA.
UP NEXT
With the change due to rain, Marshall now closes the Liberty Classic with two games on Sunday. The Herd faces Liberty at 12 p.m. before facing Elon directly after at 2 p.m.
