Bilby fires 1-under 71; sits three back of leaders
BALTIMORE, Md. – Marshall's Men's Golf team got its spring off to a solid start in the first round of the Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club in Baltimore, Maryland, on Sunday.
Marshall sits in a tie for fifth in the 20-team tournament, just five shots off the lead after several strong performances in the first round.
"I was really happy with our start to the spring. We did a lot of really good things today," Marshall men's golf coach Matt Grobe said. "As a coach, you always worry after you come through the winter that they might not be as sharp, but the guys played really well today."
Marshall has a pair of golfers in the top-15 after day one with Ryan Bilby firing a 1-under 71 to finish in a tie for seventh while Tyler Jones shot an Even-par 72 to sit in a tie for 15th.
Bilby was steady throughout his round, finishing with a pair of birdies and just one bogey. After making the turn at 1-under, Bilby bogeyed the 10th hole, but answered back immediately on No. 11 with a birdie to stay in the red.
Jones finished with a team-best five birdies and found his stride late to par No. 18 which righted the ship as he got to the clubhouse at Even.
The Herd had four players finish within seven shots of the leader as Andrew Wyss (+2) and Christian Boyd (+3) each stayed in contention.
"Ryan got off to a great start and finished at 1-under," Grobe said. "Tyler had a good round today and looks really solid. Andrew started his round with a birdie and really played steady all day. Christian made four birdies today. I'm really looking forward to watching the guys compete tomorrow."
Action in the second round of the Loyola Intercollegiate gets started at 7:45 a.m. on Monday morning.
