Strong fourth quarter produces Herd's sixth straight SBC victory
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The wins just keep coming for Marshall's women's basketball team.
Marshall trailed by eight points early in the fourth quarter, but used a 13-2 run to take the lead before getting clutch baskets from Roshala Scott down the stretch to earn a 65-60 win over Coastal Carolina in front of 1,195 fans on Education Day at Cam Henderson Center.
With the win, Marshall's winning streak is now at six straight games which tops the Sun Belt Conference. The six-game conference winning streak is the longest winning streak in league play for Marshall women's basketball since the 2004-05 season.
"That's a good win today," Marshall head coach Tony Kemper said. "That was a tough team and they really handled us well down there, so to come back and play well against them was important. We got off to a better start today."
As has been the case throughout the Thundering Herd's winning streak, Marshall (15-9, 8-5 SBC) dominated the fourth quarter, hitting seven of its eight field goal attempts.
Roshala Scott scored two of the Herd's biggest field goals in the final 90 seconds. After Scott had given Marshall a lead at the foul line, Scott blocked Coastal Carolina's Aja Blount and went coast-to-coast for a 3-point play that produced a 62-57 lead.
Coastal Carolina got a 3-pointer to cut the deficit back to one possession, but Scott hit a tough layup in traffic with 27 seconds left to essentially put the game away.
Scott scored nine of Marshall's final 10 points in the win, the Herd's 10th when trailing in the second half.
"Ro played really big down the stretch," Kemper said. "They definitely tried to take her away and for her to find a way to still make a big impact…I see a lot of growth in her. She's really pretty special when she's in the right frame of mind."
Marshall had to rally early in the fourth quarter after Coastal Carolina built a 50-42 lead. The Herd defense tightened up, which produced a 13-2 run, highlighted by a Sydni Scott 3-pointer that gave Marshall the lead.
"Our coach just told us to stick the shots when we're open – two or three passes and we should either get a layup or a jump shot," Sydni Scott said. "Once we all just took that in and calmed down, we got shots off and we took the lid off the basket. Everything was falling for us at the end."
Marshall had three players each finish with 17 points in the win: Roshala Scott, Mahogany Matthews and Abby Beeman. Matthews added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
