Boyd birdies three of last four for team-best 67; Marshall with two in top-15
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Marshall men's golfer Christian Boyd birdied three of his final five holes on Friday to fire a 4-under 67 that led the Thundering Herd's team effort at the Sea Palms Invitational in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
The weather was not favorable for golfers, but Boyd was able to keep his poise and finish strong, ending the day with a round that tied for third-lowest among the entire field.
Boyd's 67 helped the team maintain its spot in the red with the team sitting in seventh place at 1-under collectively as action turns to the final day.
"Christian had an incredible round today," Marshall men's golf coach Matt Grobe said. "The conditions were tough and we had a long weather delay, but he battled hard before the delay and kept his focus and finished off a great round."
Boyd's round was the lone effort below par on a day when the conditions were not favorable. For the second straight day, each of the Herd's golfers had at least two holes in which they finished below par, which helped to maintain their spot heading into Saturday's final round.
Tyler Jones, who was 4-under in the first round, steadied himself late, going 1-under over the final seven holes to finish with a 72 that kept him at 3-under overall and in the top-15, along with Boyd.
Ryan Bilby carded the team's lone eagle – one of only 18 in the tournament so far – on the par-5 No. 4 to aid his round and get it back to 1-over for his round. That effort kept him in the red at 1-under for the tournament.
"Tyler and Ryan really didn't have their best stuff today, but they both fought so hard and gave us some good scores," Grobe said. "I really enjoy this team. They fight and scrap for every stroke."
Action concludes at the Sea Palms Invitational on Saturday with Boyd and Jones each in top-10 contention.
Davidson's Will Davis fired a 7-under 64 to tie for the tournament lead at 10-under with Jacksonville State's Erik Jansson as action moves to the last round.
Davidson has a seven-stroke lead in the team competition as it enters the stretch.
