Jones shoots 67 to net top-10 finish, pace Herd in strong final day
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Marshall's men's golf team continued their trend of excelling on the final day, gaining strokes on the field en route to a sixth-place finish at the Sea Palms Invitational this weekend.
Play wrapped up Saturday after a week that featured challenging weather and a difficult course.
"It was a great tournament for the team this week," Marshall men's golf coach Matt Grobe said. "The conditions were tough, but the guys really fought hard and adapted quickly."
For the third straight day, Marshall had a golfer shoot a 4-under 67 to lead the team, and, for the second time in the tournament, that golfer was Tyler Jones.
Jones repeated his success of day one, finding a groove in the middle of his round. Through six holes, Jones was 1-over on the day, but he quickly changed that, notching four birdies in a five-hole stretch to jump back into top-10 contention.
Jones then separated himself from a group of players with a birdie on the last hole to take a solo 10th place finish and cap an impressive weekend.
"Tyler had a great week shooting a pair of 67s to lead us and get a top-10 finish," Grobe said.
There were only 23 rounds under par and Saturday, but three of them belonged to Marshall golfers.
Along with Jones' 67, Marshall's Clayton Thomas carded a 69 while golfing as an individual in the tournament and Andrew Wyss also shot a 1-under 70 to cap his tournament.
Christian Boyd followed his 67 on Friday with an Even-par 71 on Saturday to join Jones in the top-20. Boyd finished at 4-under for the tournament, which tied for 16th.
The Herd heads back to Huntington for a few days before hitting the road again next weekend in anticipation for the ECU Intercollegiate, which starts on March 20.
