Sweet 16! Marshall Softball Sweeps Doubleheader To Extend Winning Streak

3/25/2023 6:05:00 PM | Softball

Marshall closes out the weekend with Southern Miss Sunday at 11.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va —The 16-game winning streak continued for the Marshall softball team (26-3, 3-0 SBC) Saturday afternoon at a loud Dot Hicks Field.

The Herd defeated Southern Miss 4-0 in the first game of the doubleheader, before taking out the Golden Eagles 17-9 in a wild second game.

Sydney Nester dominated USM in the opener with a one-hitter to earn her 15th win of the season.

The second game saw five lead changes on a gusty afternoon in Huntington.

First Game: Marshall 4, Southern Miss 0

Nester mowed down a Southern Miss offense that would later score nine runs in six innings. A two-out single in 4th provided the only hit for the Golden Eagles in game one.

Marshall plated a run to break the deadlock in the bottom half of the same frame. Rielly Lucas legged out an infield single off the pitcher's glove to score Grace Chelemen. Lucas was the only hitter on both sides to have multiple hits in the opener.

Camryn Michallas hit her first home run of the year to provide insurance in the 6th. Her three-run blast was just the third long ball of the year the USM ace had given up all season.

Nester completed the shutout in the 7th, her SBC-best sixth of the season. The redshirt-senior has now struck out 133 batters, the most in the Sun Belt.

Second Game: Marshall 17, Southern Miss 9 (6 innings)

The wind gusts played a factor in the second game, which saw five lead changes and three home runs.

Ironically, it was the nation's leading home run hitter, Autumn Owen, who hit not a home run, but a game-ending single in the 6th to enforce the mercy rule, 17-9.

After the Herd led 3-1 entering the 3rd, Southern Miss struck for three in the frame to take a one-run lead. The Herd responded with a three-run blast from Grace Chelemen to go back up 6-4.

Four runs from USM in the 4th seesawed the visitors back in front.

Coach Megan Smith Lyon's team would not be denied with an Owen sacrifice fly to score Sydney Bickel, and Bub Feringa's second blast of the year to get MU back in front 10-8 after four.

The Herd played add-on in the 5th and 6th as freshman Bri Godfrey stabilized the game with 2.2 innings of two-hit softball.
