Herd looking to close strong in Wednesday's final round
PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – Marshall golfer Tyler Jones turned 15 pars and a pair of birdies into a 1-under 71 to lead the Thundering Herd on day two of the Golfweek/AGT Invitational at True Blue Golf Club at Pawleys Island, South Carolina on Tuesday.
Jones started the day with seven straight pars before dropping a shot on his eighth hole – the par-4 17th. However, he quickly made up for it, birdieing the next hole to get the stroke back.
Three holes later, Jones moved into the red when he birdied the par-3 No. 3. He then closed out with six straight pars to earn his 1-under for the round.
"Tyler played a really good round today and finished 1-under for the day," Marshall men's golf coach Matt Grobe said. "He sits at 1-over for the tournament and has a chance to move up with a good round tomorrow."
Joseph Kalaskey and Clayton Thomas each turned in solid rounds as well, finishing at 1-over 73 on the day. Kalaskey had 16 pars on the day and followed up a double-bogey on No. 4 with a birdie on No. 6 to turn his round while Thomas shot 1-under on the back nine for his.
"Joseph and Clayton played really consistent and both shot 1-over 73s today," Grobe said. "As a team, we still need to make more birdies."
Christian Boyd led Marshall in birdies with three on the day – all of which came in his final five holes as he righted the ship for a 2-over 74.
Marshall returns to the course starting at 8:34 a.m. on Wednesday morning as they look to move up the rankings. They will be paired with Central Arkansas and Southern Illinois.
