Jones' late surge cards 4-under 67 to lead Marshall on day one
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Marshall's men's golf team sits in seventh place after day one of the Sea Palms Invitational, hosted by Western Carolina at Sea Palms Resort in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
Tyler Jones, the reigning Sun Belt Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, carded an opening round 67 to lead the Thundering Herd on the first day of action.
Jones showed why he earned the accolades last week, notching birdies on each of his last three holes to finish strong and move into a tie for 7th in the tournament.
"It was a really good start for us today," Marshall men's golf coach Matt Grobe said. "Tyler played great and birdied his last three holes of the day."
Jones led three Marshall golfers to finish at par or better at Sea Palms.
Ryan Bilby also saw some success late in his round with birdies on four of his final six holes to finish at 2-under.
Christian Boyd also had three birdies in his opening round to come in at Even par for the Herd.
"Ryan played very well in shooting 2-under today and Christian played solid to finish at Even par," Grobe said.
Grobe also lauded Andrew Wyss, Kyle Mitchell and Clayton Thomas for their efforts on the day. For Mitchell and Thomas, it was their first time on the course.
All of Marshall's players carded at least two birdies, showing that there is ability to go low on the Sea Palms course.
"We are looking forward to the second round tomorrow," Grobe said.
