Marshall Softball Rolls To 9-1 Win Over Cleveland State

Herd scheduled for three more in Thundering Herd March Madness round robin over the weekend

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Freshman Bri Godfrey earned her second win in as many starts for the 18-3 Marshall softball team. The Herd defeated Cleveland State, 9-1 in six innings from Dot Hicks Field Thursday afternoon.
The game served as the opener in the Thundering Herd March Madness round robin.Â
Godfrey, the Deerfield Beach, Fla. native went five plus, allowing just two hits while striking out three Vikings. The utility player would also score in the 6th on an Alex Coleman single.
Junior Savannah Rice finished the 6th, stranding two Cleveland State runners on base to earn her first save of the year. Rice too was efficient at the plate, driving in Rielly Lucas on a sacrifice fly in the 4th.
Offensively, junior Autumn Owen led the charge with her team-leading 11th home run of the season while driving in the winning run in the bottom of the 6th to enforce the mercy rule. Marshall's catcher drove in four runs total Thursday.Â
Owen entered Thursday second in the nation in home runs.
Other runs were driven in by Bub Feringa and Erica Holt, who scored Lucas on a squeeze bunt in the 2nd.
UP NEXT
The impending weather continues to alter the round robin schedule. Marshall will now face Winthrop at 12:30 p.m. Friday from Dot Hicks Field. The Herd's game against the Golden Eagles will be the only game MU plays Friday.
