Herd Softball Falls in Series Opener at Coastal on Walkoff

Grace Chelemen’s three-run homer sparks Marshall offense
CONWAY, S.C. — A Coastal Carolina (30-12, 7-6 SBC) walkoff on a wild sequence gave the hosts the 4-3 series opening victory over the Marshall (34-5, 9-2 SBC) softball team.
Grace Chelemen's three-run homer in the 5th flipped what was a 1-0 deficit for the Herd into a 3-1 MU lead in front of a packed St. John Stadium Friday evening.Â
Chelemen's seventh of the season cleared the right field wall to score Alex Coleman and Autumn Owen, who went 2-2 from the plate with a pair of walks.Â
Pitcher Sydney Nester struck out.four in a quality start for Marshall, allowing three earned runs on six hits.
Errors would be Marshall's undoing, with the Herd falling victim to three in the field, including an errant throw to help the Chanticleers score the winning run in the bottom of the 7th.Â
