Marshall Softball Wins Wild Contest at Coastal Carolina

Final game of the weekend set for 11 a.m. Sunday
CONWAY, S.C. — Marshall softball showed the grit it has produced all season long in a dramatic 5-3 victory over Coastal Carolina Saturday.
The Herd is now 35-5, which is the program's best record through 40 games in team history. Coach Megan Smith Lyon's team is also one of four teams in the league to have 10 conference wins.
MU entered the top of the 7th tied at two before Alex Coleman, Sydney Bickel, and Autumn Owen all reached base to load the bases. Grace Chelemen's deep sacrifice fly scored Coleman from third, and after a video review, scored a speedy Bickel as well, who tagged from second. Pinch runner Erica Holt used her speed to score the Herd's fifth run on an error on the ensuing play.
In the bottom of the 7th, after Coastal scored a run and had runners on the corners and no out, Coach Smith Lyon turned to Sydney Nester who struck out her first batter, and forced the game-ending double play to pick up her second save of the year.
Nester relieved freshman Bri Godfrey (5-0) who picked up the win after striking out a Coastal batter in the 6th to end a bases loaded threat.
Godfrey came in for starter Savannah Rice, who was solid through 5.2 IP, allowing just two earned runs with three strikeouts.
After the Herd struggled with runners in scoring position Friday, Marshall scored a run in the 2nd and 3rd inning Saturday. Camryn Michallas scored after a leadoff double to start the 2nd. Chelemen's two-out single gave MU the 2-0 lead in the 3rd.
UP NEXT
Marshall and Coastal will meet in the rubber match Sunday at 11. The game was moved up an hour from the originally scheduled noon start.
