Herd Rallies to Defeat Coastal, Wins Series

Next game for Marshall softball is Tuesday at home against Alabama
CONWAY, S.C. — The Thundering Herd softball team (36-5, 11-2 SBC) rallied to win the rubber game of the three-game set against Coastal Carolina Sunday, 3-2.
The one-run victory capped a hard-fought weekend for Coach Megan Smith Lyon's team. The head coach of the Herd earned her 150th win with the school on Saturday.Â
"It's always tough to win a conference series on the road, especially at Coastal," Smith Lyon said. "So many players stepped up this weekend and I am extremely proud of the resilience and grit that our team displayed. After a tough first game, they came together as a team and bounced back really well. Now we are excited to get back to The Dot in front of our amazing fans!"
After falling behind by a run in the 1st, Marshall quickly responded in the 2nd with a Brooklyn Ulrich RBI double to left center to score Rielly Lucas. An inning later, Camryn Michallas slugged her third home run of the season to left field to give the Herd a 3-1 lead.
After a solo shot brought one back in the bottom half of the 3rd, pitcher Sydney Nester blanked the hosts from there. Nester struck out three in her complete-game 20th win of the season.Â
Nester is just one of just five pitchers in Marshall softball history to have multiple 20-win seasons.Â
Defense aided Nester to preserve the one-run win, including a fast 6-4-3 double play created from Sydney Bickel and Ulrich in the 6th. A clean 7th finished off the Chanticleers to finish off the series win. Â
