Thomas’ 74 leads Herd golfers in Day One action

MADISON, Miss. – Marshall men's golfer Clayton Thomas took full advantage of being pressed into action late on Monday, firing a 2-over 74 to lead the Thundering Herd during the first round of the Sun Belt Men's Golf Championships at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Mississippi.
Thomas, who traveled with the team as a substitute, was inserted into the lineup just minutes before Marshall's tee times after teammate Andrew Wyss suffered a hand injury after the team arrived for play on Monday.
After getting his bearings, Thomas went 1-under over his final 13 holes to finish his round, which led all Marshall golfers on day one. Thomas is currently tied for 27th.
"Andrew suffered the injury just about an hour before tee time and, after going back to the driving range, he knew that he couldn't go," Marshall men's golf coach Matt Grobe said. "Clayton had about 40 minutes from the time that he knew he had to come in to tee time, and he played awesome."
Marshall's Christian Boyd went Even over his final nine holes of action on Monday to card a 4-over 76 while Tyler Jones is also in the top-50 after a 5-over 77.
As a team, Marshall is tied for 13th with Old Dominion, heading into Tuesday's second round.
"I felt like, honestly, this is a true test of a golf course," Grobe said. "A stray shot and you are in big trouble. I don't think we played as good as we probably should or could have. I think we're better for this and I think the kids will play better tomorrow."
Marshall will again be paired with Old Dominion on the second day of action with both teams going off Hole No. 10, starting at 10 a.m. on Monday.
