Strom Wins 2023 SBC Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Year

Hurrion, McGrane, Vanderheyden join Strom with SBC postseason honors
NEW ORLEANS – Herd tennis freshman Johanna Strom was named the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year on Tuesday, as announced by the league office.
Strom was also named singles first-team all-conference as her and her doubles partner Emma Vanderheyden were named to the doubles first-team and the pairing of Sophia Hurrion and Aisling McGrane were named to the second-team in doubles.
Strom put together quite the singles season in her first year in Huntington. The native of Stockholm, Sweden, put together an 18-2 record during the spring season, 9-2 in SBC action, at number one and two singles with one match at number three singles. 16 of her 18 wins came in straight sets, seeing wins over opponents from Kentucky, WVU and Illinois' then No. 72 ranked Ashley Yeah.
Strom and Vanderheyden accumulated a 13-5 record at number one doubles this spring, including 5-3 in conference play. The pair captured key victories over pairings from Penn State, WVU and VCU among others.
Hurrion and McGrane compiled a 13-1 record in doubles this season playing primarily number two doubles with two matches at number three. The pairing picked up key victories over pairings from WVU, Cincinnati, Illinois and Old Dominion among others.
