MADISON, Miss. – Marshall's men's golf team wrapped up action at the 2023 Sun Belt Championship at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Mississippi, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Thundering Herd jumped up one spot from Tuesday's second round to finish in 13th place at tournament's end.
"The guys played really hard today," Marshall men's golf coach Matt Grobe said. "Conditions were tough and the guys fought all day long. I saw a lot of great things out of the guys this week and all spring long. We have a very bright future."
Marshall freshman Clayton Thomas, who entered the week as a substitute, finished off an impressive three-day run at the tournament with a birdie on the 18th hole, which helped him lead the Thundering Herd contingent.
Clayton shot a 4-over 76 on Wednesday to finish at 11-over for the tournament, which was tied for 42nd in the tournament.
While Thomas and many members of the Thundering Herd are young, there is one senior – decorated talent Tyler Jones – who played in his last team event with Marshall.
Jones' had three top-10s this spring and is ranked No. 205 in the nation.
"Tyler has had a great year and I am hopeful that he will get a regional bid on May 3," Grobe said.
While Wednesday marked the end of the season, Grobe said he looked forward to seeing what his young nucleus of players can do moving forward as the focus shifts to the 2023-24 season.
"I am really looking forward to watching how the kids all play this summer and I can't wait for the fall to get back on the course and compete with these guys," Grobe said.
