JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Six months ago, the Marshall men's track and field program was dormant. By the end of the 2023 season, senior Brett Armbruster became the first Herd men's track athlete to compete in the NCAA Championships since 2001.
Armbruster raced a 1:52.76 in the 800, which concluded the Barboursville native's season as the 43rd-best in the entire D-I East Region.
"Wanted to do better, but it has been crazy just being here," Armbruster said. "This experience has been wild, being around such good runners. It's a cool experience, it gets Marshall back on the national radar, can't be mad about that!"
Armbruster led the charge in Marshall men's track and field's return season. His accomplishments have been meaningful to Head Cross Country Coach and Marshall graduate Caleb Bowen.
"It's surreal, I never thought I would be here, not with a male athlete," Bowen said. "This year, it was frankly going to be a challenge to get a guy on the podium at the conference meet, but Brett told me he was going to do it, that he was going to break James Kneeland's [800] record, and that he was going to be here at the National Championship, and he did all of it and got to the highest stage which is very cool."
