HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Three representatives of Marshall Men's Golf are competing in sectional qualifiers for the 123rd U.S. Open Championship on Monday.
Current Marshall golfer Tyler Jones joined former Thundering Herd golfers Alex Weiss and Logan Lagodich in taking the next step toward the dream of competing in this year's U.S. Open.
"It was awesome to have three Marshall University Men's Golf graduates advance to the Final Qualifying of the U.S. Open," Marshall men's golf coach Matt Grobe said. "Monday will be a fun day of watching all the results come in to see if they can make the field for the 123rd U.S. Open Golf Championship."
Players will compete in the sectional qualifiers on Monday, which involves 36 holes of play.
Jones, who shot a 2-under 69 at Highland Meadows Golf in Sylvania, Ohio, to advance to Monday's qualifier, will be one of 78 golfers at Springfield Country Club looking to advance. Five players are expected to advance from Springfield with two alternates as well.
The Westerville, Ohio, native will tee off from No. 10 at 8:15 a.m. in his first round of action before beginning his second round of play at 1:45 p.m. from the No. 1 tee.
Weiss will see action at Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina, where he will take aim as one of 76 competitors in the sectional there.
The Pickerton, Ohio, native advanced to the sectional by birdieing two of his last three holes to shoot a 4-under 68 for one of the qualifier spots at Lexington Country Club in Fort Myers, Florida.
Weiss will tee off from the No. 1 tee at 8:35 a.m. on Monday to start his first round. His second round of action will start off No. 10 at 2:05 p.m. There will be five qualifiers from Old Chatham with two alternate spots available also.
Lagodich will be one of 120 qualifiers taking aim at a split-venue qualifier on Monday in Columbus, Ohio.
His first round starts at 7:20 a.m. off No. 1 tee at Brookside Golf Club in Columbus while his second round starts at 1:20 p.m. off No. 10 tee at Lakes Golf and Country Club in Westerville, Ohio.
Of the 120 participants taking aim in this qualifier, 11 will advance with two alternate spots available also.
Lagodich shot a 1-under 69 at Westfield Country Club's North Course in Westfield Center, Ohio, to finish fifth out of 120 qualifier participants. He grabbed a pair of birdies on the front before parring his final 11 holes to earn the spot.
