DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Marshall University volleyball team (1-1) split its opening two matches at the Bash at the Beach falling to the Citadel (20-25, 23-25, 18-25) and sweeping host Bethune-Cookman (26-24, 25-12, 25-17).

"Today was a good learning day for our program," Herd volleyball head coach Ari Aganus said after the first two matches. "We competed hard against a great (The) Citadel team, but didn't execute our game plan or take care of first ball contact. However, even with that, we attacked really well and distributed the ball well. Jazminn (Parrish) and Brynn (Brown) stayed really consistent for us in both matches alongside Bria (Samilton) holding it for us in the back row. Our team held together and showed a lot of grit and understanding of trusting the process. Essence (Clerkley) was a huge reason we were able to stay in the first match. We have to clean up our first ball and get in rhythm a lot faster and more consistently to finish out this tournament with a win!"

The Herd captured its first win of the season in a sweep of the Wildcats. MU trailed 12-7 early in the contest, but an 8-3 run brought the visitors back to a tie, 16-16, after a Kylee Stokes kill. The two sides traded runs before a BCU error, and a Brynn Brown kill sealed the opening set for the Herd.

Marshall carried its momentum into the second and third sets, never trailing and outscoring Bethune-Cookman 50-29.

Brown registered 31 assists with Bria Samilton recording 17 digs. Stokes led the way with 13 kills and seven blocks in the victory.

The Citadel 3, Marshall 0
The Herd fell in its season opener to the Bulldogs. MU had a .414 attacking percentage in the first set, but couldn't overcome The Citadel.

Jazminn Parrish had 11 kills and a .429 attacking percentage in the contest. Samilton collected 15 digs as Sarah Wadsworth blocked a team-high four attacks.
