HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 5 Marshall University men's soccer team (3-0) closed a three-match homestand with its third consecutive shutout in a 3-0 victory over the Xavier Musketeers (1-1-1) on Friday at Hoops Family Field. Goalkeeper Gabriel Perrotta recorded his third shutout to begin his Herd career.
"We didn't lose any game balls tonight with no hat trick, but the run may continue as long as we're scoring one more than the opposition," Herd men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie said about his team not having a hat trick for the first time this season. "Having zeros on the board is great for us. We're trying to work well defensively. I thought we got a lot of help tonight from the bench to make sure we kept that clean sheet."
Perotta made a pair of key saves in the contest, including one on a free kick to end the first half.
"Three shutouts are not about me, it's about the team," Perrotta said about his and the team's third shutout of the season. "The ball barely gets to me, but when I get called on, I have to react to do a good job for my teammates because they deserve it. So, it's not my clean sheet, it's the team's clean sheet."
In his Marshall debut, Pablo Simon made quite an impact. The junior tallied MU's second goal of the contest on an assist from Rai Pinto in the 12th minute, while assisting on Adam Aoumaich's first goal of the season with a cross at the 57:40 mark.
"The game was very consistent, we did what the coach asked of us," Simon said through Perrotta translating in Spanish. "The first goal was a corner kick that we were working on during the week. My goal was a ball that Rai put in behind. I was happy with it and happy the team did a consistent job."
Alvaro Garcia-Pascual scored his second goal of the season, and the eventual game winner, just 7:55 into the match off a corner kick from Alex Stjernegaard.
