Wolgemuth Earns Second SBC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week Honor of the Season

Marshall’s goalkeeper leads the conference in saves and shutouts
NEW ORLEANS – For the second time in the first three weeks of the season, Marshall sophomore goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth has been named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
The sophomore from Lincolnton, North Carolina leads the SBC with 24 saves and four shutouts. Her .960 save percentage tops the league, and is ranked seventh nationally.
"This is fantastic for Alexis as we are delighted for our team and how we are playing and defending," Head Coach Michael Swan said. "It is a testament to the whole group and while Alexis is getting the applause, rightfully so with her performances, we could safely give the applause to many more. Alexis is humble, she's all in, and she's got absolute talent."
Wolgemuth pitched two more shutouts last week to bring her total to four in five matches in 2023. The second-year goalkeeper made a season-high nine saves in the Herd's 1-0 victory over Ohio last Thursday. The goalkeeper made several one-on-one saves to prevent the Bobcats from finding an equalizer.
With the strong backline, Wolgemuth needed just one save in the team's defensively dominant 3-0 win Sunday.
Wolgemuth and the Herd will have two more matches at home in the coming week, starting with a 6:00 p.m. kick against Miami (Ohio) on Thursday.
