Dominant Second Half Gets Herd to 6-0 Start in Conference Play

Marshall off to best start in conference play in 35 years

Box Score | Coach Caldwell Press Conference

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – "Relentless" was the word Coach Kim Caldwell used to describe Marshall's (12-5, 6-0 Sun Belt) 90-60 win over Old Dominion (12-4, 4-2 Sun Belt) Thursday night in front of 1,088 fans at the Cam Henderson Center.

The win was the largest margin of victory for the program in conference play in five seasons, and it pushes the Herd to its best start in league play since the 1988-89 campaign when the Herd started 8-0.

"I thought we were relentless, I thought that we were tough," Caldwell said. "We played a level I haven't really seen us play. So we are getting better and hopefully we continue to build off of that momentum."

Marshall, who was tied at halftime, outscored the Monarchs by a 50-19 margin after trailing by one at the 5:21 mark of the 3rd quarter.  Despite being without leading post presence Mahogany Matthews, Marshall out-rebounded ODU, 43-34, in the win.

The Herd shot 55 percent for the game, with Breanna Campbell leading all scorers with 24 points.

Meredith Maier also tallied a career-high 20-point performance while Abby Beeman notched the program's second recorded triple-double since 2000, with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

Beeman is only the 5th player in NCAA Division I women's basketball to have multiple triple-doubles this season.

"I just think that we are a resilient group," Beeman said. "We got down and knew we had to put our foot on the gas and get going and once we did the momentum and the crowd and us hitting shots carried us through to the end."

The win marks the 3rd time the Herd has scored 90 or more in SBC play this season. MU's average margin of victory in its six conference games this year is 16.7 PPG.
