Marshall Tennis Splits Home Contests Against Radford and WVU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Tennis team (4-2) picked up a win over Radford (0-2), 7-0, and fell to West Virginia (3-0), 4-3, in the team's first home matches of the season.

"Tough match against West Virginia," Herd tennis head coach John Mercer said after the match. "It was played at a good level. It came down to a couple of points in a couple of the matches and we weren't able to pull it out. We had the challenge of coming back out and playing again against a team we had a good match against last year and it was good. I think we're playing at a good level.

The Herd fought hard to start the day in a loss to the Mountaineers. Johanna Strom, Emma Vanderheyden and Rieke Gillar all took their respective singles matches in three sets at No. 1, 2 and 4, respectively.

MU rebounded against Radford in its second match of the day. Strom and Vanderheyden started doubles action with a quick 6-0 win on court one as Doroteja Joksovic and Aisling McGrane sealed the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 3.

Joksovic and McGrane quickly began singles play with straight set wins at courts three and five, respectively. Strom then clinched the match for Marshall with a 6-2, 6-0, win at No. 1 singles.

Vanderheyden and Gillar followed with three-set wins on courts two and four.

Andjela Lopicic then sealed the sweep of the Highlanders with a straight sets win on court six.
