Marshall tied atop Sun Belt Conference standings following victory Saturday
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team (9-5, 3-0 SBC) led wire-to-wire in front of 1,288 fans at the Cam Henderson Center Saturday afternoon in a 68-51 win over Arkansas State (7-6, 1-2 SBC). The Herd jumped out to a 16-point lead after just 10 minutes and never looked back in its third-straight victory.
The win puts the Herd tied atop the SBC standings with JMU at 3-0 after two weeks of play and marked first-year head coach Kim Caldwell's 200th career victory
"I have been very blessed and fortunate to coach a lot of great players," Coach Caldwell said. "The way I coach and what I demand of my players is a lot, it's hard, so I have coached a lot of tough players over the last eight years. So if 200 needs to mean something, let's let it mean that, let's put it back on the players. Thank you to them, this is for them."
In the classic style of Coach Caldwell's teams, Marshall forced 20 turnovers, and created 25 points off the bench. 10 different Herd players scored, including junior guard Aislynn Hayes who led the way with 15 points while scoring her 1,000 career point in the win.
"It means a lot to score 1,000," Hayes said. "I am the type of player that is always working hard, and I can say that hard work pays off. I can say I am very blessed to be where I am today."
The Red Wolves made a run in the second half, getting to within seven in the third quarter. Scores from Hayes and Peyton Ilderton - who notched a season-high eight points - put the Herd back up double-digits after three.
"We talked before the game about it being a game of runs, we said at that media timeout, 'That was their run, now let's have ours,' and they did a good job."
MU closed the game with an 11-point scoring run in the fourth while rolling to the 17-point win.
