Herd wins 13 of 16 events in first home dual meet of 2023-24

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Swimming and Diving team (1-2) down the Bowling Green Falcons (1-3), 209-91, for a victory in the team's first home dual of the 2023-24 season. The Herd took first place in 13 of the 16 events, sweeping the podium in four contests.
"I thought our women did a good job of coming back following a later evening session last night (at Ohio) and showing up ready to go this morning," Herd swimming and diving head coach Ian Walsh said after the win. "Being able to one-two the first relay really set the tone for the meet."
MU started out the dual with the team of Mia McBride, Paige Banton, Madeline Hart, Klava Katayama taking the 200 Medley Relay (1:44.73) with Parker Lynch, Audrey West, Katie Fisher and Claire Kenney taking second in the event (1:46.88).
Marshall swept the podium 200 Freestyle with Hart (1:52.18), West (1:53.57) and Allison Dodd (1:55.88). It also saw Banton (1:05.84), Jenna Bopp (1:07.14 and Jessica Humby (1:07.98) sweep the 100 Breaststroke Banton (2:18.68), West (2:22.08) and Humby (2:27.53) sweeping the 200 Breaststroke. MU's final podium sweep of the day came in the 200 Individual Medley with Molly Warner (2:08.07), Banton (2:08.41) and Dodd (2:10.01) finishing first through third respectively.
"It was a great team win today," Walsh continued. "We had a lot of people contribute points throughout the session. Madeline, Klava and Paige all had two wins today and were able to make good race decisions that led to some really positive outcomes."
The Herd also saw wins from Charlotte Thompson in the 1000 Freestyle (10:36.88), Eszter Laban winning the 500 Freestyle (5:08.59) and Katayama taking both the 50 Freestyle (24.22) and 100 Freestyle (52.51).
Mia McBride captured the 200 Backstroke in 2:04.22 with Hart taking the 100 Butterfly in 57.48. Marshall closed out the dual with Katayama, Gabrielle Ivey, Lynch and West taking the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:36.38).
"Grace Kelsheimer took 1m again today and runner up in 3m earlier in the meet," Walsh said. "She has been a model of consistency for us and this weekend really highlighted that."
Grace Kelsheimer had another great day on the boards. After sweeping the 3m and 1m dives at Ohio on Friday, Kelsheimer won the 1m Dive with a score of 260.25 and second in the 3m scoring 257.55.
"We will get some much-needed rest and recovery this weekend and prepare for another weekend of competition up in Buffalo on Friday," Walsh finished.

It also saw Banton (1:05.84), Jenna Bopp (1:07.14 and Jessica Humby (1:07.98) sweep the 100 Breaststroke Banton (2:18.68), West (2:22.08) and Humby (2:27.53) sweeping the 200 Breaststroke. MU's final podium sweep of the day came in the 200 Individual Medley with Molly Warner (2:08.07), Banton (2:08.41) and Dodd (2:10.01) finishing first through third respectively.
