HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – A late goal from Joao Roberto helped earn the No. 5 Marshall Men's Soccer team (7-1-2, 2-0-1 SBC) a 2-2 draw over the No. 10 James Madison Dukes (5-0-4, 1-0-1 SBC) Friday night at Hoops Family Field.
Roberto's equalizer came in the 87th for his first goal of the season with Marco Silva tallying his fourth goal of the season in 70th minute.
"It was a top-10 matchup for sure," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said after the match. "Credit to Paul and JMU, they've done a great job and they're a tough team. We have to cut out the mistakes. We made too many that led to two goals. But that fightback, that is championship spirit right there."
Down 2-1 with less than four minutes on the clock, Marshall was pushing for a tying goal. Taimu Okiyoshi then sent a pass down the left wing to Tarik Pannholzer. Pannholzer followed with a cross to Roberto. Roberto, who came in just three minutes prior, sent the tying goal past JMU goalkeeper Sebastian Conlon at the 86:25 mark.
In the 70th minute, the ball was bouncing around in the 18-yard box. It landed at Silva's feet, who fired a shot while falling backwards. The shot deflected of a Dukes defender and found its way past Conlon for The Herd's first goal of the contest. The redshirt sophomore registered his fourth goal of the season, tying Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos for the team lead.
JMU tallied its first goal of the match in the 14th minute as Aleksandar Vukovic and Takahiro Fujita combined to make a team save before Evan Southern put home his rebound. The visitors second tally came off a MU giveaway in the 56th minute in the defensive end with Josiah Blanton scoring off the mistake.
Goalkeeper Dan Rose made a key save in the 42nd minute to keep the score tied 1-0 at halftime.
Marshall outshot JMU 13-7 in the contest with each team recording four shots on goal.
