Herd’s standout DE leads all of FBS, Sun Belt in several statistical categories

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall defensive end Mike Green has been named a semifinalist for the 30th Bednarik Award semifinalist, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Tuesday.

One of the most prestigious awards in college football, the Bednarik Award is given annually to college football's most outstanding defensive player.

"I'm really excited for Mike as the nation begins to recognize what we here at Marshall have known for a while – how elite of a person and player that Mike is," Marshall Football coach Charles Huff said. "His continued commitment to this team and this university is greatly appreciated and I personally am excited for his future and all the success that he's earned."

Green is No. 1 in the FBS in several major defensive statistical categories. Those categories include:
-      Sacks (13.0)
-
Tackles For Loss (17.5)
-
Sack Yardage (107)
-
TFL Yardage (117)
-
Tackles among FBS Defensive Linemen (60)

Green is coming off a two-week stretch in which he has accumulated 5.0 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss.

The Williamsburg, Va., native earned Reese's Senior Bowl National Defensive Player of the Week and SBC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Nov. 4 after amassing 9 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks in a win over ULM.

Green followed that up on Saturday with 5 tackles, 3.0 sacks and 3.0 tackles for loss despite only playing one series into the second half of the win over Southern Miss.

To date, Green has registered a tackle for loss in every game this season and has also registered a sack in seven of nine games that Marshall has played in.

In the two games that he did not register a sack, Green had double-digit tackles, setting a career-high with 11 against both Western Michigan and Georgia State.

The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1994 and is named in honor of Chuck "Concrete Charlie" Bednarik, who was an All-American at Penn and went on to an All-Pro career with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Finalists for the 30th Bednarik Award will be announced on Nov. 26, 2024 and the winner will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 12, 2024.
