HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (15-14, 6-10 SBC) ended the season a sweep of the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (9-19, 5-11 SBC) on Senior Day.
The Herd took the contest, 25-20, 25-21, 25-22. MU honored five seniors, Sarah Stratton, Bria Samilton, Megan Taylor Olvia Fogo and Brynn Brown, in a ceremony after the game.
"The past two games, they stayed true," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Ari Aganus said after the weekend's sweep. "We didn't have the season on paper that we wanted, but it was better than last year. We've made a few strides. They never wavered once. It's so hard to say goodbye to these five (seniors) because they have laid the foundation for us."
Brown along with Audrey Geer each recorded their second double-double of the weekend. Brown registered a match-high 27 assists 12 kills as Geer recorded a team-high 19 digs and tied with Fogo for the team-high at 13 kills with a .393 hitting percentage.
The two sides traded the first eight points to see the first set tied 4-4 early on. However, the Golden Eagles took eight of the next 10 to grab a 12-6 lead over The Herd. Marshall fought back with 10 of the next 13 points to take the lead on a Beatrice Ciccarelli solo block at 16-15. MU closed out the set with nine of the last 14 points taking the opening frame 25-20. The Herd hit .320 in the first set.
Marshall dropped the opening point of the second set, but a quick 3-0 run with a pair of kills by Fogo and a block by Taylor put the Green and White on top for the rest of the set. The Herd held its largest lead of the frame at seven points, 19-12, after one of Brown's seven kills in the match. Southern Miss fought off three set points, but Stratton ended it with one of her four kills in the match at 25-21. MU hit a match-best .325 with 13 kills on 40 attacks and no errors.
Just like the first, the sides traded the opening eight points of the third to see the set tied 4-4. However, after a USM attacking error, Marshall grabbed a 5-4 advantage and never looked back. The Herd eventually extended its lead to five, 12-7, on a kill by Fogo. Southern Miss fought back to tie the frame 22-22, but kills 12 and 13 of the night by Geer put it 24-22 for match point. Brown combined with Ciccarelli for a block to close out her collegiate career to seal the sweep for Marshall.
