MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The eighth-ranked and second seeded Marshall University Men's Soccer team (11-1-7) fell 6-5 in penalty kicks after playing the No. 10 and top-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers (12-1-7) to a scoreless draw after 110 minutes in the 2024 SBC Men's Soccer Championship game in Morgantown on Sunday.
"I feel for our guys," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said after the match. "We played really well. It was just an inch here or there. In the penalty competition, Aleksa got a hand to two. Usually those don't go in the back of the net. When you get down to penalties it really is a coin flip sometimes. 200 minutes and no one could score a goal between the two sides. It was very, very close. A rivalry game, both teams are ranked quite high up, but it wouldn't matter if we were 150 and 160 in the rankings, I think it would still be that tense and that exciting."
Aleksa Janjic stood large in between the sticks. The junior goalkeeper recorded his sixth clean of the sheet making five saves through regulation and the two overtime periods.
Janjic made three key saves in the opening half in the seventh, 27th and 38th minutes respectively to keep the Mountaineers off the board.
The Serbian keeper followed with a save in each of the second half and the first and the first overtime with the MU defense making a clearance of the line at the 105:39 mark of the second extra period.
In penalty kicks, each team mad their first five to send it to extra kicks. WVU's Dylan Dromers made his attempt. Joao Roberto then fired The Herd's sixth attempt, but Marc Bonnaire got a hand on the shot and saved it.
