HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University Men's Basketball (1-0) opened the 2024-25 regular season and Corny Jackson era with a 90-57 win over the Davis & Elkins Senators Monday night in the Cam Henderson Center.
"I thought we played hard," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Corny Jackson said. "I'd like to see us shoot the ball better, but those guys were pretty physical. I thought we matched their physicality. We've talked since the Pikeville game, especially when teams come into the Henderson Center, we want to set the tone. We don't want to match anyone's energy. They should be matching us. I think we did a good job of that tonight."
Wyatt Fricks opened the season with a double-double on 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds on a 6-for-7 shooting night from the field, including 2-for-3 on three-point attempts.
Obinna Anochili-Killen netted a game-high 18 with Nate Martin adding 15 and Ryan Nutter finishing with 11. In his MU debut, Mikal Dawson led the contest with five assists to go with eight points.
The Herd started the contest on an 8-0 run led by four points from Anochili-Killen to go with a pair each from Dawson and Martin. A pair of free-throws from Anochili-Killen at the 10:38 mark gave Marshall a 13-point advantage at 25-12, its largest of the opening half. Anochili-Killen drained another pair of freebies to end the first 20 minutes of play to send MU up 37-24 heading into the break.
Much like the first, The Herd began the second half with a 9-0 run with a three from Nutter, a triple and dunk from Fricks with Dawson ending it with a free-throw to go up 46-24.
A pair of Creighton Theineman threes gave Marshall a 35-point advantage at 90-55 in the final minute for its largest lead of the ballgame.
MU made 47.1 percent (32-for-68) from the field and outrebounded D&E 45-35, including 17-13 on the offensive glass.
