HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball team (1-1) fall Saturday afternoon, 90-80, to the Toledo Rockets (1-1) at the Cam Henderson Center.
"I like our team. We're not going to let one lose define us. We played hard in spurts," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Corny Jackson said. "We have to be a team, like I said last week, that's going to play hard and work for 40 minutes, no matter who you put out there. Regardless of if you're making a shot to get back in transition. It hurt us early in transition. They made some acrobatic shots in the first half."
Nate Martin led the way with 17 points and 14 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Dezayne Mingo followed with 12 points and six assists as Will Moore tallied 12 points on a 4-for-8 shooting day from behind the arc.
The Herd trailed by as many as nine points, 16-7, in the first 20 minutes of play, but battled its way back. A quick 5-2 burst with a layup by Martin and a three by Cade Gibbs tied the contest 37-37 with 3:13 left in the half. Toledo answered with 10 of the final 16 points of opening half as MU trailed 47-41 at the break.
The Rockets kicked their lead to as many 17, including an 82-65 advantage with 4:54 remaining in the ballgame. However, a 12-4 run, capped off by a Will Moore three, cut the deficit to 86-80 with 1:34 left. Toledo held off the Marshall rally with the final four points of the game.
The Herd outscored the Rockets 37-23 in points off the bench and 15-12 in second chance points.
