Mikal Dawson knocks down six 3-pointers, Anochili-Killen adds double-double in rivalry win
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Men's Basketball got 27 points from Mikal Dawson and Obinna Anochili-Killen added a double-double as the Thundering Herd earned a 79-70 win over former Mid-American Conference rival Ohio in front of 4,278 fans at Cam Henderson Center.
With the win, Marshall moved to 6-5 overall on the season.
"I was happy that we got off to a fast start," Marshall Men's Basketball coach Cornelius Jackson said. "We talked the last few days about being the more desperate team. All we've been talking about is finding a way to win. I'm proud that our guys came out and did that tonight."
Marshall dominated the majority of the game, getting off to a quick start and forcing the Bobcats into catch-up mode. The Herd led the contest for 36:47 of the 40-minute contest.
The game's turning point came late in the first half. With the game tied at 29-all, Marshall went on a 12-4 run before halftime with Dawson collecting a steal and a 3-pointer at the horn to produce the eight-point advantage.
Dawson had nine of 12 points during the run and Jalen Speer added a three-pointer as part of his 12 points to put the Herd ahead 41-33 at the break.
The Herd scored the first seven points of the second half to extend the lead to its largest margin at 15, but the Bobcats got the lead back to within seven.
Nate Martin came up with a pair of big plays in the second half, driving inside for a layup, then kicking out of a double-team for a Dawson 3-pointer that increased the lead back to double-digits as the Herd hung on down the stretch.
"I guess you could say that might've been the dagger," Dawson said of Martin's pass. "I'm surprised he could even see me over there. I'm glad he did, though. It was a good pass."
Marshall had three players – Anochili-Killen (5-of-7 FG), Dawson (9-of-12 FG) and Wyatt Fricks (3-of-4 FG) - shoot at least 70 percent from the floor en route to the win.
The Herd shot 53 percent from the floor and connected on 8 of 19 3-pointers – six of which came from Dawson.
Marshall has a quick turnaround as the Thundering Herd hosts West Virginia Wesleyan at 7 p.m. on Monday night.
