Herd collects 30 assists on 37 made baskets en route to 55 percent shooting
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Men's Basketball got 30 assists on 37 made baskets and the Herd saw 12 different players score in a 93-63 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in front of 3,424 fans at Cam Henderson Center on Monday night.
With the win, Marshall moves to 7-5 overall as the team gets set for action in the Sun Belt Conference.
"It was a really, really good team win," Marshall Men's Basketball coach Cornelius Jackson said. "To have 30 assists and just 12 turnovers is obviously big-time for us. It shows that the guys are sharing the ball."
Mikal Dawson continued his hot shooting from the floor, connecting on five 3-pointers to finish with 19 points while Obinna Anochili-Killen was efficient from the floor, knocking down six of eight shots to end the night with 14 points.
Dawson's success from the outside was built from stellar inside-out passing from the Herd, who worked diligently to get the ball inside to the high post against the Bobcats' zone before getting kick-outs and extra passes from open looks from 3-point range.
The end result was a contest in which the Herd hit 13 3-pointers – many of which were set up by getting the ball to the middle and working the offense to attack open space.
Dezayne Mingo only finished with five points on three shot attempts, but he added 10 assists with just one turnover and eight rebounds. Nate Martin also saw the court well against the zone, scoring nine points while adding six rebounds and five assists.
The night's top moment came in the late stages when Kaiden White rose above everyone to dunk home a rebound off a missed 3-point attempt that got the crowd and Marshall's bench on their feet.
With the win, Marshall now looks to the conference portion of the season, starting with Saturday's contest at Southern Miss. Game-time is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday from Reed Green Coliseum.
