HATTIESBURG, Miss. –
The Marshall University Men's Basketball team (7-6, 0-1 SBC) dropped its Sun Belt Conference opener, 68-66, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (5-7, 1-0 SBC) Saturday afternoon.

"I thought we had our chances; we have to be tougher," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Corny Jackson said after the game.

The Herd had four in double-figure scoring led by Obinna Anochili-Killen with 15 as he added seven rebounds and three blocks to his stat line.

Mikal Dawson and Dezayne Mingo each followed with 14. Mingo rattled home six of his seven shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc.

Nate Martin brought up the end with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds, falling one short of his third double-double of the season.

Marshall came out and took the opening lead on a Mingo triple 16 seconds into the game. The two sides proceeded to trade leads across the opening 10 minutes of the contest.

Southern Miss grabbed the lead with 8:34 left and kicked out its lead to a game-high eight points, 39-31, with 73 seconds left in the half. Mingo hit a three at the buzzer cut the MU deficit to 39-34 at halftime.

Much like the first half, the second began with the two teams trading baskets for the first 10 minutes. At the 11:28 mark, Dawson was fouled on a three-point attempt. The senior proceeded to make all three freebies to tie the game, 50-50.

The two teams battled it out down the stretch and a 4-0 run by The Herd closed with an Anochili-Killen free-throw evened the score 66-66 with 1:28 on the clock. Denijay Harris hit a pair of free throws for USM as Marshall fell on the road. Harris finished with a game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds.
