Herd Men’s Basketball Falls in Non-Conference Finale at Elon

Dawson registered fourth 20-point game of the season

ELON, N.C. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball team (7-7) dropped its final non-conference contest of the 2024-25 regular season, 73-59. Saturday night to the Elon Phoenix (9-4) in Elon, North Carolina.
"Obviously a tough loss," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Corny Jackson said. "I thought our execution was pretty good, but we have to make plays."
Mikal Dawson registered his fourth contest of 20 or more points this season with 24 on an 8-for-14 shooting night, including 5-for-9 from behind the arc. The graduate student added six boards to his stat line.
On a 6-for-9 shooting night, Obinna Anochili-Killen followed with 12 points as Nate Martin grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Elon led from the jump and carried a lead for the first five minutes of the contest. However, a quick 6-0 run with four points from Anochili-Killen and a dunk from Wyatt Fricks gave Marshall a 13-11 advantage at the 13:26 mark.
The Phoenix regained the lead, 16-15, with just over 11 minutes left in the first half. MU trailed by as many as 14 in the opening 20 minutes, before using a 5-0 run to end the half as it trailed 37-28 at the break.
The two sides traded buckets until Dawson completed an and-one to cut the deficit to four, 42-38, with 14:13 remaining. However, Elon went on a few runs down the stretch as it the home side held about a double-digit the rest of the contest.
The Phoenix came into the contest outrebounding its opponents by 12.1 rebounds per game, but The Herd was only outrebounded 42-38 and won the battle on the offensive glass 18-12.
Marshall outscored Elon 14-9 on second chance points and 28-22 in the paint.
